The 2016-2017 school year marks the 50th Anniversary of the opening of John F. Kennedy High School. On Saturday, May 6, Kennedy Principal Lorraine Poppe will have the pleasure of inducting 13 alumni into the school’s “Hall of Fame.”
It is a way of publicly recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of these graduates; they have not only demonstrated success in their chosen profession, but have also given back to the local community or through a variety of charitable endeavors. This induction ceremony will take place during the 50th Anniversary Celebration. A complete listing of inductees can be found below.
In addition, two retired faculty members, Gregg Maushart and Shula Hirsch, will also be recognized for their contributions to Kennedy High School that extended well beyond the school day. Gregg was a physical education teacher and the first varsity football coach; Shula was a member of the English Department and the speech and debate advisor. Their combined 70-plus years of service to the Bellmore-Merrick community have influenced thousands of graduates who walked the school’s halls since it opened in 1966.
As many of you may already know, the alumni association kicked off its 50th anniversary celebration with the placement of several new honorary and memorial bricks and a bench into its Cougar Walk of Recognition, at the northeast corner of the Kennedy school football field. The walkway is designed to project its students, teachers and administrators well into the future for generations to come.
The JFK Alumni Association seeks Bellmore-Merrick’s support from community partners—local businesses, practitioners, community organizations and residents, to help make this 50th Anniversary Celebration a success.
The association is grateful for your support. We recognize the excellence of our teachers, the support of our central administration and the partnership with our parents. Together, all make Kennedy High School the great place that it is. We look forward to your support and thank you for investing in our children, school and community! Go Cougars!
