Amanda Kowalski’s first-grade students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore took a proverbial trip around the globe to study how different countries celebrate the holiday season.
During the weeklong lesson, the students learned about St. Lucia Day (Sweden), Christmas (Mexico), Chanukah (Israel) and Kwanzaa (Kenya and the United States).
The students traveled to stations and worked with parents to create a holiday craft that represented each holiday tradition, including a Kwanzaa mat, poinsettias, a candle wreath and a menorah. They also decorated a construction paper suitcase with symbols from the various holiday celebrations to symbolize their trip around the world and to hold their crafts.
“The students learned that family is a large part of each tradition,” Kowalski said.
