Calhoun and Mepham High Schools, and Merrick Avenue Middle School helped state Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. collect toys as part of the senator’s Extend the Holidays Toy Drive this month. It was part of a district-wide effort among all schools to help those in need during the holiday season.
The annual event, which has been taking place since 1998, brings toys to children at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola after the holidays and throughout the year to help them through difficult times.
Students in Brian Joyce’s leadership class at Calhoun High School packed up toys for Sen. Charles Fuschillo’s Extend the Holidays Toy Drive.
Calhoun’s drive started as an interclass competition among all grade levels, eventually incorporating Brian Joyce’s leadership class, who worked together to make a public service announcement and visited all social studies classrooms to encourage students to donate.
Merrick Avenue Middle School’s student council, under the direction of advisers Joe Amador and Richard Aceste, collected six large bags of toys throughout December
The leadership class students visited Winthrop to drop off some of the 500 donated toys this week. The student government at Mepham, under the direction of Rosa Quagliata, collected eight boxes of toys for the drive. Merrick Avenue’s student council, headed by advisers Joe Amador and Richard Aceste, worked throughout December to collect toys from the school community, gathering six large bags of toys for the drive.
“We deliver all of the toys to Winthrop-University Hospital after the holidays, when kids come back to the hospital,” said Senator Fuschillo. “For a moment, they forget why they are there. It brings a lot of joy to their lives.”
“I love watching ideas like this evolve,” added Calhoun Principal David Seinfeld. “As the senator said, it is about allowing children who are in the hospital to rejoice for a few minutes.”
